The Heart Witch

The Heart Witch is set in the depths of the forest at night. In a slow and tortuous awakening from its slumber, a creature of the underground sheds its rotten skin away and uncovers the fragile vulnerability of its being: a child tastes with tender appreciation the pleasure of being alive. At the sound of a heartbeat, she unlocks the bloody heart of her adult self and gives it as an offering to the audience.

Involved soil, dead leaves, soundscape, projected drawing, animation, two costumes, water, menstrual blood, an ox heart and drawings made of menstrual blood in a heart shape given out to the audience as well as movement.

40 minutes in length

Performed in September 2019 in Wootton Fitzpaine village hall to a public audience as part of Sandra Reeve’s project group of that year.
